Enrico Moretti the author of New
Geoqraphy of Jobs was very interestinq, with specific information that would be pertinent
to Redwood City. He analyzed economic development and Bay Area economic vitality
and resilience. He found that there is a multiplier effect that certain iobs indirectly provide
support for other iobs. For example in a 10 year timeline the creation of hiqh tech, hiqher
waqe iobs, provides the support for the creation of many more iobs to provide the
services for those hiqher waqe workers. This appears to be more true of hiqh tech iobs
producinq more support iobs than manufacturinq does.
He mentioned 3 implications: 1. a small minority of the total employment, rouqhly 20% of
jobs create wealth that supports 70% of other workers in support fields. 2 the best way for
a city to qenerate iobs for less educated workers is to attract hiqh tech companies that
hire hiqhly educated workers, that then need the other support iobs and workers; 3 that
taxes that penalize hiqh tech employers are counterproductive as most of the hiqh tech
expenditures are personnel expenditures.
A critical piece to the success of an area is qood educational opportunities and well
educated community members. Great schools, students who qraduate and well educated,
and companies that hire the well educated attract more hiqhlv educated people to live in
the community. Access to qreat education then becomes a key for community success.
 F
November 1, 2012
Barbara Pierce Date
Council Member
The Administrative Code requires reports of conferences or meetings for which a council member requests per diem or expense reimbursement.
Reports must be submitted to the City Clerk of no later than the Wednesday of the week before the next City Council meeting.
