DRAFT
SAFETY ELEMENT
of the
REDWOOD CITY GENERAL PLAN
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Authority and Purpose
Section 65302.1 of the California Government Code requires
that all general plans have a safety element. Its purpose
as stipulat,ed in the legislation is:
A safety element for the protection of the community from
fires and geological hazards including features necessary
for such protection as evacuation routes, peak load water
supply requirements, minimum road widths, clearances around
structures, and geologic hazard mapping in areas of known
geologic hazard.
The first safety element of the Redwood City General Plan
will highlight the more obvious and known safety hazards
pending more definitive studies which are expected to ensue in
succeedin years.
 II. POLICY STATEMENTS
A. Safety Hazards
1) The City of Redwood City recognizes the fact that many types
of safety hazards exist within its boundaries despite its
diligent prosecution of existing standards, codes and regu-
lations. The City is cognizant of the existence of certain
hydrological and many types of man-made hazards which it
proposes either to abate or reduce to an acceptable level
of risk through various combinations of public and private
actions.
2) It will be the policy of the City of Redwood City to insti-
tute study programs to definitively identify the exact nature
and extent of certain hazards and to incorporate into the
on-going legislative and management process specific meas-
ures designed to reduce identified hazards, or to eliminate
them.
B. Goals
The safety goals of the City of Redwood City are to:
1) Revise and administer all codes and safety regulations app-
licable to new construction, whether public or private, to
obviate the existence of safety hazards which present either
unacceptable or avoidable types of safety risks.
