8.D. - Page 89
Government-Generated Solid Waste
Many local governinent operations generate solid waste, much of wizich is eventually sent to a landfill. Typical sources
of waste in local governinent operations include paper and food waste from offices and facilities, construction waste
from public wvrks, and plant debris from parks deparhnents. Organic materials in governinent-generated solid waste
(including paper, food scraps, plant debris, textiles, wod waste, etc.) generate methane as they decay in the anaerobic
environment of a landfill. E missions from the waste sector are an estimate of inethane generation that will result from
the anaerobic decornposition of all organic waste sent to landfill in the base yar. It is iiortant to note that although
these einisions are attributed to the inventory yar in wizich the waste is generated, the emissions themselves will occur
over the 100+ yar timeframe tlat the waste will decompose.
Due to changes in contract waste haulers,2011 solid waste data was provided by Recology as a proxy for 2010 data that
was not available. Using 2011 data, this sector ranks sixth out of seven sector in the mLmicipal inventory with 700 tons
of governinent-generated solid waste estimated to be landfilled, accoLmting for approximately 142.99 inetric tons of
COze,in the form of inetlane from decomposing matter. This represents about 2 percent of the Cits total ernisions.
Figure 9: Government Waste Emissions by Subsector
Community
Ce ners
3?,; MSC
36%
PoliceFacility Cityf'arlcCns
5° Libraries FlruStatlons CItyH:ll 79i
13'%a 3% ti
Table 20: Government Waste Emissions by Subsector
- . _ - - . • -
City Hall 5.28
Fire Stations 4.11
Libraries 18.21
Police Facility 7.05
Community Centers 46.06
MSC 51.84
City Park Cans 10.45
.
I I ' ii i 1 i i i i
