6.2.B. - Page 1
RE PO RT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the Cit Mana er
May 6, 2013
SUBJECT
Resolution in support of Community Development Department's submission of a
Proposal to Caltrans for a Gateway Monument Project
RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a resolution in support of the Proposal by the Community Development
Department to Caltrans for approval of the replacement of two monuments used to
display service club and civic organization emblems.
BACKGROUND
There are two existing structures adjacent to EI Camino Real, (State Route 82) one at
Chestnut Street and one at Claremont Avenue, that serve as Gateway Monument Signs
upon which emblems of service clubs and other civic organizations are displayed. The
structures are very dated, in poor condition, and should be replaced.
ANALYSIS
The monuments are adjacent to EI Camino Real; consequently, approval must be
obtained from Caltrans to proceed with any project. As part of the application to replace
the monuments, a Resolution of Support from the Local Entity is required by Caltrans.
Staff attended the February 10, 2013 meeting of the Inter-service Club Coordinating
Council (ISCCC) to explain and discuss the City's proposal to replace the existing
monuments. The proposed new monuments consist of steel mesh panels, and the
overall dimensions of the structures are approximately 17 feet wide by 16 feet tall. The
conceptual design, which is attached to this report, is a much more durable and modern
structure that better represents the guiding principles of the Grand Boulevard Initiative
and Redwood City as a place of innovation. Broad support was given to the new
monument design from all service club representatives present at the meeting.
Additionally, the ISCCC's President signed an Agreement indicating ISCCC's
agreement to removal and replacement of the existing monuments.
ALTERNATIVES
Do not approve the Resolution which would preclude the City from submitting the
proposal for replacement of the monuments.
