in consultation with the MLD,would then prepare a plan for treatment,
study and reinterment of the remains.
o In compliance with state law(Section 7050.5 of the Health and Safety
Code and Section 5097.94 of the Public Resources Code),in the event
that historical artifacts are found, all work within 50 feet of the find will
stop and a qualified archaeologist will examine the find. All significant
artifacts and samples recovered during construction would be cataloged
and curated by a qualified archaeologist and placed in an appropriate
curation facility. The archaeologist must then submit a plan for
evaluation of the resource to the City of Redwood City's Planning
Department for approvaL If the evaluation of the resource concludes that
the found resource is eligible for the California Register of Historic
Resources, a mitigation plan must be submitted to the City of Redwood
City Planning Department. The mitigation plan must be completed
before earthmoving or construction activities can recommence within the
designated resource area.
Historic Resources
As stated in Section 4.5.12,the existing structures on the project site have been heavily modified
over the years and the original architectural styles of the buildings are indiscernible due to the loss of
historic fabric. The buildings have no historic significance and the demolition of these buildings
would have no impact on historic resources. (No Impact)
There are no nearby historic resources that would be impacted by the proposed development(i.e.,
loss of setting or context),nor is the project site within or adjacent to a historic district. (No Impact)
Paleontological Resources
Paleontological resources are the fossilized remains of organisms from prehistoric environments
found in geologic strata. In general, most fossils in the Peninsula and San Francisco Regions are
found along the immediate Pacific Ocean coastline, and in locations within the outcropping marine
units in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The project site is not in close proximity to either area.
Geologic units of Holocene age are generally not considered sensitive for paleontological resources,
because biological remains younger than 10,000 years are not usually considered fossils. These
sediments have low potential to yield fossil resources or to contain significant nonrenewable
paleontological resources. These recent sediments, however, may overlie older Pleistocene
sediments with high potential to contain paleontological resources. These older sediments, often
found at depths of greater than 10 feet below the ground surface, have yielded the fossil remains of
plants and extinct terrestrial Pleistocene vertebrates. Excavation on-site will not exceed 10 feet and it
is improbable that paleontological resources will be discovered on-site due to the distance of the site
from the Bay and because no paleontological resources have been discovered in this area of
Redwood City.
