She also concurs that this is great
information to have on our website.
Vice Mayor Gee thanked Ms. Riordan and said it was a great report. He stated that he
would like the Council and the City to think about progressive care housing for seniors:
independent living and assisted care. He would like to see opportunities for them and
he would like further discussion on this issue. Ms. Riordan pointed out that there are
currently two projects for senior care.
One Council Member appreciated this report. He would like to find more tools for
affordable housing since the funding for Redevelopment money was taken away, and
he mentioned how the City is suing for money on this issue. Another Council Member
said thank you for continuing this report. He appreciated the dollar amounts stated in
the report because the public can realize the impact.
One Council Member appreciated what Vice Mayor Gee brought up regarding seniors,
and he would like to see more ownership instead of rentals being part of the discussion
with developers. The Mayor brought up the housing needs of college students. She
further said that the community has many different housing needs, like the housing
needs for Kainos. Nonetheless, the City does a lot of things for our community, but
would like the developers to hear the different needs in housing from buying a condo to
senior and transitional housing.
Public Comment
Shauun Cartwright thanked Ms. Riordan for the report. She stated that 750 people are
in most need of housing, and 500 of those people come from Pete's Harbor and the
Peninsula Marina. She said that people can buy a seaworthy boat for $10,000, which
she described as affordable housing, and they do not have to worry about earthquakes
and rise of sea level.
James Lee stated that he would like Redwood City to be the top City in the County for
affordable housing. He also liked the idea of the City suing the State to get money back
and liked what they are doing to make affordable housing possible. However, he felt
that more can be done, such as looking into the Inclusionary Housing Ordinance like
San Mateo. He also stated that streamlining the permit process only helps
development and it does not streamline affordable housing and the underclass if there
is no Inclusionary Housing Ordinance. He urged Council to help those that lost their
homes at Pete's Harbor and the Peninsula Marina.
Leslie Webster commented that she was forced to move with other Pete's Harbor
tenants. She opined that due to the City and development, five hundred people have
been displaced and their community destroyed. She encouraged Council to visit the
website www.savepetesharbor.net
The City Manager stated that late in the spring, with the full Council, there will be a
Community Benefits discussion as it relates to development in the community and how
it relates to housing needs. Staff will be researching what other cities have to offer and
look at the post Redevelopment Agency situation. Also, he asked the community to
CTY COUNCIL April 8, 2013
MEETING MINUTES PAGE 11
