appeal cannot be dropped, because both parties have a right to be heard on this issue.
Lastly, another statement that the City Attorney wanted to clarify is that prayer at public
meetings is not disallowed, if it does not promote a particular religion.
One Council Member made two comments: she would like Council to look at and
support SB 557 and through public comment, anyone can see that open government
does work. She stated that all campaign contributions are disclosed; and, the Uccellis
are prominent community members, who are involved with a lot of organizations. They
were not the single leading factor to their campaign contributions. This Council Member
further stated that community leaders frequently contribute; and so, she encouraged
people to get involved in their communities and learn more about the people running for
office. She further stated that the Council had worked hard to get to their positions: they
speak to and listen to a lot of people. Everyone has the opportunity to express
themselves and that is part of the open process.
Mayor Aguirre thanked this Council Member for the comments and noted that the public
has access to the same information.
Lilia Ledesma said that she had worked with the City Council. She said that she was
very upset with the insults towards the Council and the insults questioning transparency.
Ms. Ledesma said that she knows some of the Council Members, some more than
others, and that the Council sacrifices time with their families and others that they love,
because they care about the City and she knows how hard they work and how
committed they are. Ms. Ledesma said that she is involved in many community
organizations, because Council Members inspire her.
CITY COUNCIL: Waive reading of the consent calendar and the full text of ordinances
and resolutions, and approve the Consent Calendar items.
M/S Bain/Gee to approve the Consent Calendar as submitted.
