At this time, the two Council Subcommittee Members spoke about this project and its
development through the years. Council Member Ira said that they laid out the priorities
of the Council in 2009, and branded Stanford into Redwood City as part of Redwood
City. He said that they had to learn about the university and meet with the deans and
other Stanford employees to learn about them and what they had to offer. He said that
this is special and unique to Redwood City and a long lasting relationship. He would
like to recognize Community Development Director Bill Ekern and City Attorney Pamela
Thompson for obtaining their perspectives, and that they thought the Development
Agreement did incorporate the goals of the City Council.
Council Member Foust mentioned that it had taken three and half years to go through
the meetings with Redwood City and Stanford staff. She said that it had been a journey
on what were the things that mattered: considering the neighborhood for this
development, how it can help the neighborhood, and weave it into the community. She
pointed out that the idea of the Stanford project was to enhance and build a legacy
project that made Stanford a part of the Redwood City and to build a partnership with
the community. She also mentioned that is a partnership not just development. Lastly,
she mentioned that she wanted this project to set a foundation to enhance everyone's
life.
Tracy DeLewu, with the Blue Deep Yard Construction and a Board of Director with the
Redwood City Chamber of Commerce, said that this project is a good partnership. He
said that it is a long term commitment and it will transform the neighborhood. He
mentioned that the additional funds from this development would assist parks and
recreation and music in the parks that will make the community and planners happy.
Amy Buckmaster, President and CEO of Chamber of the Commerce, thanked Redwood
City and the Subcommittee for their vision and hard work on the Guiding Principles.
She also thanked Stanford for their investment in Redwood City and the partnership.
Josh Pierry, resident of Redwood City and Board Member of the Redwood City
Chamber of Commerce, commended Stanford for being a good partner. He also
mentioned that this is a unique opportunity. He would like to see Redwood City be like
Palo Alto.
Jo Ann Socklov, with the Redwood City Education Foundation, said that it is the
Foundation's 30th Anniversary this year, and she thanked everyone for their vision,
spirit, and heart. She stated that her foundation has primarily volunteers and she is
pleased that that Stanford is partnering with Redwood City.
Julie Wesolak, with the Sequoia YMCA, said that she was excited about the City-wide
partnership and how it will serve all people from the youngest of the community to
seniors and all in between. She said that Stanford has been supportive.
James Lee mentioned the Freedom of Information Act request and he would like the
Council to look at a letter from Gita Dev that was sent to the City Planning staff about
CITY COUNCIL April 8, 2013
MEETING MINUTES PAGE 8
MINUTE BOOK NO. 64
Page No. 322
