continue to offer concerts at that location. The concert was well received and
the attendance has continued to increase. She asked that if the band speaks in
Spanish that they translate it into English so that everything could be
understood by everyone. She felt all the concerts have been wonderful
although the weather has not cooperated.
Commissioner Ball felt that attendance at the concerts was down from the
previous year. The concert in Redwood Shores was well received by the
community and Yvette Hayworth of Redwood Shores Inc. could provide
mailing labels for Redwood Shores residents if we would like them.
She suggested a Sunday afternoon tea dance and a brown bag lunch as ideas
for future concerts.
Commissioner Distefano felt there has been an increase in attendance at this
year's concerts and especially enjoyed the ones held at Mezes Park.
Superintendent Hartman questioned the value of having a concert at the
Farmer's Market because people are not coming to listen to music but to shop
and leave.
Chairperson Filippi spoke to Don Gielow regarding holding a "Day on the
Green" event at Sequoia High School where bands would play music on one
or two stages on the campus with along with displays of art from the Art
Center. He also suggested opera in the park or jazz in the park as possible
concepts to consider. He also felt the start time of 6:30pm should be changed
until later in the evening and also that concerts should be held on Saturdays
or Sundays. He suggested that when the Cultural Commission and Park and
Recreation Commission meet jointly, that they talk about the idea of a simple
band stand to be installed for concerts in the park. Commissioner Piulle felt
that we should consider cutting down the amount of concerts offered this
year (12) down to 6 or 7 which would help increase attendance. Chairperson
Filippi suggested extending the concert season into September because of
more favorable weather conditions and felt the Commission should discuss
the concert series later this year.
ITEM 6 -FAMILIES ARTS DAY REVIEW
All the Commissioners had favorable comments about the event.
Comm;ssioner Piulle took an exit poll to determine where people heard
about the event and most people she spoke to mentioned the Citywide
Recreahon brochure and the Children's Hour at the Library as a source of
information. Commissioner Piulle also felt that we should design a
permanent logo to be used each year for the event and that BFI recycling bins
should be provided for cans and glass containers. It was also suggested that
handouts be placed in the bags ahead of time and also to provide the Fox
Theater with event flyers to hand out. Supervisor Hannon said 650 balloons
were given out at the event. It was suggested that a thank you letter be sent to
Target Stores for their sponsorship of the event.
