Miss Redwood City scholarship money and use it for youth programs. She
also felt that more public relations advertising was needed for Families' Arts
Day and not necessarily more money for the program. She said she has a
deep reservation about putting the $30,000.00 into the Cultural Commission's
budget and questioned if it is just a passing through our budget on its way to
the Fox Theater or will the Commission take control of the $30,000.00 and be
able to use it elsewhere.
Commissioner Fischer commended the sub-committee for its work and said
she agreed with Commissioner Piulle regarding support of the Miss Redwood
City program as a cultural event. She felt she needs more time to fine tune
the budget ideas presented but said it was a good endeavor.
Commissioner Distefano said she disagreed with Commissioners Piulle and
Fischer about the Miss Redwood City Pageant and that the money is used for
scholarships.
Commissioner Filippi said the Commission did request an increase of
$20,000.00 in FY95-96 budget and it was cut by the City Manager and Finance
Department during the initial review. The sub-committee felt that if the
Commission was to have control over all cultural funds, it would be a way of
expanding our budget without increasing the overall request to the City
Council. Commissioner Filippi felt by centralizing the cultural budget, it
would put the Fox Theater on the same level as other groups and that it was
not appropriate to have any venue receive a disproportionate share of funds.
Commissioner Fischer liked the concept of having the control of all cultural
funds under one roof and felt it was a good business decision. She stated this
was not suggested as a punitive damage to the Fox Theater but as a way for
the Commission to do as much as possible for the community.
Commissioner Saye said he strongly favors the schools but felt the
Commission cannot isolate themselves into the schools. He spoke about the
$15,000.00 Fox Theater granting program and felt that fine shows were
presented but there was a lack of marketing and the audiences were small. He
would support continuing to provide funds to try to make usage of the Fox
available to those groups most able to use it effectively. He also felt the
program has benefits to downtown businesses. The Commissioners spoke
about holding a special meeting rather than discussing tonight.
Commissioner Ball felt the Commission does not know if all the groups will
return to us for funding in the next fiscal year. She felt it would not be
beneficial to list each separate item in our proposed budget and suggested
going back to the City Council and requesting the $20,000.00 again.
