The information obtained from these interviews
was given to DES for use in developing the architectural and structural study.
Mr. Filippi reviewed a list of facility requirements developed from the
interviews and noted that the user groups indicated they could occupy a
renovated Carrington Hall for a total of 108 days and/or nights during one
yeaz with performances, technical prepazation, and dress rehearsals. Mr.
Filippi reviewed a list of endorsements the project has received from various
groups and community leaders. He stated that Carrington Hall is a great
auditoriwn and is a great investment in our children and schools, and will
add to the quality of life in our community.
-Structural and Architectural Report
Tom Gilman of DES Architects and Engineers presented the results of the
architectural portion of the study. He gave the history of Carrington Hall and
reviewed the present azchitectural condition of the facility. He mentioned
that he worked with the Office of the State Architect and reviewed their
regulations regarding the renovation of Carrington Hall. The auditorium
was built in 1927 and had its last major renovation done in 1935, and a roof
repair was done within the last 10 years. Mr. Gilman highlighted several
azchitectural and structural components of Carrington Hall for the audience
using several color slides. He mentioned it was a challenge to deal with the
structural concerns of Carrington Hall and still maintain the historical
integrity of the building. He has also worked with the Historic Resources
Advisory Committee to ensure this aspect. Mr. Gilman noted the building
does not comply with accessibility/ADA codes which will need to be
corrected. Mr. Gilman discussed several renovation alternatives for
Carrington Hall including creating an addition to the Brewster Avenue side
of the building, adding a side stage, and providing adequate backstage
facilities.
Mr. Gilman estimated the initial cost projections would be $4.5 million for
construction and $1.Q million in soft costs, bringing the total costs to $5.5
million which would include construction and architectural renovation. The
project schedule would consist of 6 months of engineering, 4-5 months for
