Civic Cultural Commission Page 2
Minutes of Ju/y 1, 1999
She spoke about the attendance at their Shakespeare performances and that
the 54,500 grant was for instructors' salaries for three programs.
Bill McKenna of Vintage Music Theater spoke regarding the location of their
performances for their large grant request. He stated he spoke to John
Anagnostou regarding rental of the Fox Theater on Friday, January 14 and
Saturday, January 22. These dates are available but there is some question
regarding the rental costs and Mr. Anagnostou plans to call him back next
week but it looks like the rental costs could be as high as 52,000. Mr.
McKenna spoke about the attendance at their performances at the Veterans
Memorial Senior Center; Carrington Hall; and San Mateo Center for the
Performing Arts, and their desire not to use Carringtan Hall since many
seniors will not attend due to the darkness of the campus; the facility was
also very cluttered and difficult to use. He stated they are interested in
having two performances at the Fox Theater (one matinee, one evening) and
one matinee performance at the Senior Center.
ITEM 1 — LIBRARY PROGRAMS
Nothing to report.
ITEM 2 — CITY CENTER PLAZA — SUMMER FALL ENTERTAINMENT
REQUEST, RAISER RESOURCES, LLC
Erin Raiser was not in attendance; this matter will be tabled until she arrives.
This request is separate from the request to install a fountain at City Center
Plaza.
ITEM 3 — LARGE GRANT FUNDING DISCUSSION AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
Commissioner Del Carlo found an error in the totals of the grant spreadsheet
and corrections were made. Total rraximum requests were actually
5101 ,403 and total minimum requests were actually $82,353; a total of
554,828 is available in the large grant category. The Commissioners
brainstormed to develop a list of concerns regarding the large grants and the
decision making process. They discussed suggested grant amounts for each
grant request and the possibility of making some grants from the small grant
category or the Cultural Commission-sponsored events category rather than
the large grants category.
Virginia Ball of Tis the Season spoke regarding the funding requests and
explained the history of the program. She said Tis the Season began as a
Cultural Commission event and she felt it was still under the umbrella of the
Commission and that it still needs the support of the Commission. Ms. Ball
answered the Commissioners' questions regarding the Tis the Season events
and what last year's grant of 55,700 provided. This year's request of
59,000 includes the rental of a stage for 52,500 to be used in the post
parade production.
The Commissioners discussed each grant and made suggestions of possible
grant amounts for each.
