Civic Cu/tural Commission Pege 3
Minutes of Ocober 4, 1999 -
ITEM 4 - PUBLIC ART ORDINANCE
Commissioner Britschgi reported on her conversation with Joan Jorlan of the
Redwood City Art Center regarding her meeting with David Irmer the
developer of the proposed theater project. In their conversation, Mr. Irmer "
noted that he would iike to see public art as part of the new cinema
development. After further discussion, the Commission agreed to have their
Public Art Committee bring back a recommendation on public art in both city
owned and private facilities as well as any percentage for the arts in public or
private developments. Such a recommendation should include what role the
Commission should play from serving in an advisory capacity or having total
control over a project. The Committee should also look at the ordinance
provided by Mr. Watry at the Commission's September, 1999 meeting.
ITEM 5 - SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS
-Budget
Commissioner Del Carlo noted that a report on a Public Art Fund
recommendation would be available at the November meeting.
-Children and Schools
Commissioner Schenone reported that her committee was recommending the
continuance of the Art and Poetry contest. The Committee recommends that
the timeline be adjusted so that awards are presented at the May
Commission meeting; that the theme for the Contest be °Your Hope for the
Future; for K-5 the theme should be what they hope before they are 13 years
of age; 6-8 grades hopes for their future. In the younger age group, judging
should encourage high participation, creativity and heartfelt inspiration. More
professional judging should be used for the 6-8 graders. The Committee
asked the full Commission to think about the theme and timeline issues for
approval at next month's meeting.
It was noted that Redwood City 2000 would be holding a town hall meeting
in mid October and that the Committee may want to champion youth art
programs at that level. The Commission was also invited to think creatively
about prizes and other ways of thanking both the participants and the
judges.
-CCC Sponsored Events
Commissioner Del Carlo reported that the survey on the concerts taken at
the last event was inconclusive about the location; and provided good
comments on the types of groups that the audiences appreciated. Corrected
survey results will be available next month.
Commissioner DelCarlo also spoke of her participation with the Tis the
Season Committee. The group is planning a parade at 4:30 p.m. on
December 4, 1999 followed by tree lighting, carols and fireworks.
-Planning.
Commissioner Pierce reported on her participation in the Department
Strategic Planning Group looking at a 10 year plan.
-Publ;c Art
