Civic Cultura/Commission Page 3
Minutes of June 7, 2001
attend rehearsals of the "Aladdin" or"Christmas Carol" productions and Ms.
Breckenridge thought it was a good idea but would need to check further.
-North Star Academy
No presentation made.
-Peninsula Ballet Theatre
Christine Leslie of the Peninsula Ballet Theatre (PBT) spoke about the history
of this organization and their desire to have the Fox Theater as a "home
base". She explained that PBT does not presently have a permanent location
and the funding will assist in their production costs to use the Fox Theatre.
Ms. Leslie stated that PBT is looking to expand their outreach program to
Redwood City and spoke about their current outreach efforts at Mountain
View.
-Redwood City 2020
Georgi La Berge spoke about Redwood City 2020's "Redwood City Celebrating
the Arts" program at Canada College which was held on May 12. She stated
students from all Redwood City public and private schools participate in this
program and over 400 people attended the production. Ms. La Berge
explained that this year's grant request will pay for the artistic director for
Redwood City 2020's performance in 2002.
-Redwood City Education Foundation
Bruce Codding, Board President of the Redwood City Education Foundation,
spoke about their program and explained that the Foundation raises money
for the Redwood City School District, who then contracts with Kollage School
for the Arts to provide the "Music in the Schools" program. This new grant
request will expand their current program for second and third grade
students who will receive weekly music instruction for the entire school year.
Mr. Codding stated that all fundraising efforts and grants received by the
Foundation are not related to Kollage's grant request presented this evening.
Commissioner Dale stated that $64,100 of this evening's large grant requests
are for schools and $43,800 represents the amount of minimum school
requests. He felt that the Cultural Commission was not designed to fund this
percentage of their grant monies to schools and suggested that the
Commission ask City Council for more funding for schools which could be
handled by the Commission or go directly to the schools. The Commissioners
felt this was a good idea and would discuss it later on the agenda.
-Redwood Symphony
Steven Repenthal of the Redwood Symphony explained that the Symphony's
is in its 16t'' season and that the group consists of all volunteers. He stated
that their audiences are Redwood City and Peninsula-based and 80-90% of
their performances are sold out. The Symphony normally performs eight
concerts per year and ticket prices are $6-$15 per person. Mr. Repenthal
