In response to Vice Chair Ruskin's questions regarding a Child Care Facility, Director
Church said, "This is a very difficult project as you know.... One of the needs the
(developers) has is to obviously try and cover the expense of the site, while getting as
much product that they can sell or rent on the site. So every use that doesn't do that is
negative to the overall economics of the project. The Child Care Facility is sort of in that
category. What we have talked about.... since there will also be an objective to move one
or more of those older houses on the site to preserve some of the historic properties within
the area, to move those to... the end of Lathrop and Maple Street... and that might be the
location of the child care. But there is a whole host of issues relating to the Child Care
Facility, outdoor space and size."
Chairperson Howard said that a retail feasibility study was going to be done and perhaps
that location would be considered for a Child Care Facility provided by an outside
provider. She said she would not be inclined to support a Child Care Facility out of the
area, "because the whole intention of us creating this urban village was to have people be
able" to walk their children to day care and cut down on travel through the City.
Chairperson Howard said she liked the additional open space, additional landscaping, the
improved circulation, the "pedestrian friendly" features and the fact that the developers
were working with the City's committees.
In response to Chairperson Howard's questions, Mr. Hansen said the acquisitions
process is proceeding, and he would be able to provide a better picture of that situation
towards the end of summer.
Director Leipzig said that he wanted to remind his colleagues, "that the Child Care
request costs money. You can see the price of these units going up dramatically as we put
on a burden such as a Child Care Facility."
4. CLOSED SESSION
None scheduled.
5.
