9 Projeet De.rcription
US '!01 PEDSTRIAN UNDERCROSSING AND
BAIR iSLAND STORM DRAIN PUMP STATION PROJECT
This Initial Study and the Mitigated Negative Declaxation (MND) assss the potential environmental
impacts of the US 101 Pedestrian Undercrossing and Bair Island Storm Drain Pump Station I'roject
for use in local planning and decision making. In compliance with the Califomia Environmental
Qua]ity Ac (CEQA),the City of Redwood City (City) decided to prepare a MND for the proposed
project because the Initial Study found that, with the incorporation of appropriate mitigation
measures, all potential impacts xeated to the project would be less than significant.
1 INTRODUCTI4N
The proposed US 101 Pedestrian Undercrossing and Bair Island Storm Drain Pump Station Project
would connect the Bayfront and Downtawn areas of the City with a joint-use path dedicated to
bicycles and pedestrians under the U.S. Highway 101 (US 101) bridge at Redwood Cxeek. The
paved path would follow an estng unpaved trail adjacent to the creek and provide a safe, eff cient
connection between waterfront deelopment on Bair Island Road northeast of US 101 and the
existing commercial facilities along Convention Way ancMain Street southwest of US 101. The
upgrade and xepla.cement of the nearby stormwater pump station on Bair Island Raad would enable
the station to handle the 100-yeat storm event in the aea. The pxoposed project also includes
landscaping improvements to the City-owned paxcel south of Convention Way.
1.1 PROJECT LOCATION
The propased project is located adjacent to US 101 in the eastern portion of the City. The City is in
San Mateo County on the SarFtancisco peninsula in northern Califarnia, appromately 27 miles
south of San Francisco and 24 miles north of San Jose. Within the City, the Bayfront area and Bair
Island Road are north and east of the project locarion, and the commercial developments on
Convenrion Wap and Main Street are south and west of tle proposed locarion. The City's
Downtown area is appromately 03 miles sonth of the project. Figure 1-1 shows a regional xnap of
the pxoject locarion.
1.2 PROJECT BACKGROUND
With an increase in development of the waterftant areas east of US 101,the City pa.ns to improve
pedestrian and bicpcling connections between the Bayfront and Downtown areas. An existing
narrow foat trail crosses under the US 101 freeway bridge at Redwood Creek, but does not provide
sufficient headroom and access for bicyclists. Upgxading this eristing path to a joint-use pedestrian
and bicycle path would connect the One Marina development and other potenrial Bapfront
development projects on Bair Island Road with Convention Way and Main Street and pxovide
access to the Downtown areas.
1-1 US 90 Pedestriara Undercro.csing and
Baar Island Storm Drain Puriap Statfora Praject
