The analysis includes an
explanarion for each fiding presented in the CEQA Checklist.
2.1 AESTHETICSI VISUAL RESOURCES
The proposed U5 101 Pedestrian Undexctossing and Bair Island Storm Drain 1'ump Starion Praject,
which would be located along the western bank of Redwood Creek,is an important visual resource
for the Downtown and Bayfront neighborhoods of the City of Redwood City (City}. The U.S.
Highway 101 (US 101) undercrossing,a joint-use bicycle and pedestrian path,would follow an
existing path under the US 101 bridge at Redwood Creek. Although the bridge and support pilings
affect the immediate views under the freewap, the entrances to the path and the extension alang the
City-owned parcel have unobstructed long-range views of the creek. Figure 2-1 shows the esting
view of Redwood Creek, at the eastern entrance to the US 101 undercrossing, looking east towatd the
marina and waterfront development areas of the Bapfront neighborhaod on the northeast side of the
freewap.
Redwood Creek provides open views of natural watenuays and vegetated maxshland in close
proxunity to uxban offices, commercial buildings, and residential development. Figure 2-2 shows the
existing commercial development,a car dealership, which is adjacent to the project area on the
eastern side of US 101. The propased lacation for the Bair Island Storm Dain Pump Starion would
be located neat the foreground seen in Figure 2-2. Figure 2-2 aiso shaws the exisring Class II bike
lane an Bair Island Road, which would connect to tle proposed joint-use path near the ne Marina
development currently under construction.
On the south side of US 101,commexcial development along Convention Way and offices along
Main Street are immediately east and west of the protect area. Figure 2-3 shows the San Mateo Credit
Union and other commexcial development along Covention Way,adjacent to the proposed locatian
of the path along Redwood Creek. The 333 Main 5txeet residential development, part of the 2007
North Main Street Precise Plan,is south of the project axea.
As shown in Figure 2-3,a narrow foatpath runs along the northern bank of Redwood Creek. This
partion of Redwood Creek has limited public access. The adjacent development, paking, and service
areas have restricted esting public views of the cxeek in the proposed project area.
2-1 U.S 101 Pede.ctrian Undercrassaragnd Bair
Islarrd Anrad Sto7n Draisr PumStation Project
