American Electric Lighting (AEL) has a long, rich
history of serving the utility, municipality, and DOT markets. With over 50 years of experience in roadway
lighting, backed by the reliability of being part of the Acuity Brands family, AEL will provide high - quality
products and post -sales service that will be here for many years to come.
Company History
American Electric was founded in 1953 to address the unique needs of these markets, and was acquired
in the early 1970s by ITT. The company was then purchased by Forstman /Little, an investment and
holding company, in 1985; in 1986, Forstman /Little officially changed the name of the line to "American
Electric Lighting." The brand thrived and grew under this leadership, and was acquired by Thomas &
Betts (T &B) in 1991. Under the T &B umbrella, AEL acquired Emery decorative products (now known as
the Heritage line) and Dark -to -Light photocontrols (DTL) in 1998.
In 2001, Acuity Brands Lighting, Inc. purchased AEL, DTL and the Heritage line. Acuity Brands is one of
the world's leading providers of lighting fixtures and related products and services, with fiscal year 2009
net sales of over $1.6 billion. Other ABL brands include Lithonia Lighting Holophane Peerless Mark
Architectural Lighting TM , Hydrel ° , Gotham ° , Carandini ° , RELOC ° , MetalOptics Antique Street LampsTM'
Tersen Synergy Lighting Controls, Sensor Switch Lighting Control & Design TM , and ROAM
Headquartered in Atlanta, GA, Acuity Brands employs approximately 6,000 associates and has
operations throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
Production Capabilities and Capacity
Acuity Brands Lighting maintains several production facilities, with various fabrication and assembly
capabilities, and currently runs assembly operations at these facilities on a one shift basis. On that single
shift, our Mezquital, MX plant (the primary point of manufacture for AEL) is running at approximately 75%
capacity. ABL's Cochran, GA facility (the AEL point of manufacture for ARRA compliance) is currently at
80% of capacity on a single- shift. Any of the ABL facilities could potentially double their assembly
capacity by adding another shift, and would be more than willing to do so should customer demand
require it.
