Mayor Howard announced that on Friday, May 29, 1998 between 2 and 4 p.m., the City <br /> will host a public forum in the City Hall Council Chamber to discuss expanding ferry <br /> service around the Bay for the purpose of alleviating traffic congestion. She said that State <br /> Senator Quentin Kopp, Supervisors Nevin and Huening and possibly Assemblyman Ted <br /> Lempert and other interested public officials will attend. She invited everyone to attend. <br /> (203) <br /> C. Mayor Howard announced that a proposal to cut the Vehicle License Fee paid to cities is <br /> awaiting the governor's consideration. Mayor Howard said the state took a great deal of <br /> property tax revenues from the cities beginning in the early 1990's and currently enjoyed a <br /> large surplus in the state budget. She said the state wasn't even considering returning <br /> those property taxes to the cities and counties, and "now they are talking about cutting fees <br /> that provide revenue to cities." Mayor Howard asked staff to bring information to the <br /> Council and asked the Legislative Committee to recommend action on this issue at a future <br /> meeting. (203) <br /> MEMO 5/19/98 <br /> City Attorney Schricker advised that if the bill had already reached the Governor then <br /> time was of the essence. <br /> D. Mayor Howard announced that Wednesday, May 27 was "Local Government Rally Day" <br /> with a rally being planned in Sacramento, and said, "what they are hoping is that people <br /> will take the time to come to show opposition to the different cuts that are proposed and to <br /> seek restoration of City, County and Special District property taxes."
