being top vote getter. And again I want to thank all of you. I will do my best to
support the Mayor and her activities, to work with you all as a team, and to merit
the honor you have given me tonight. Thank you very much.""
Couneil Member Claire said, "There are seven former mayors here tonight:
Mayor Bob Bury, the youngest of all seven by far, Brent Britschgi who is
probably still very young, and Bill Rhodes is out there, and of course those of us
up here who have served as Mayor. I want to remind everybody that it is a very
difficult job to be Mayor of this City, and I am sure that Diane will carry on in
the tradition of former Mayors and do an excellent job as all seven of us who are
here tonight, have done in the past." Councilman Claire noted it was going to be
difficult with two Iras on the Council. Councilman Claire said, "In my wildest
dreams I would have never thought a former student of mine would be sitting
with me on the City Council. And Jeff Ira is here tonight. And I want to remind
him that if he doesn't vote my way, I still have the opportunity as his former
professor, to go back into the grade data base and change his grade to F, which
will deprive him of his B.A. degree and his C.P.A. Just rernember that. All
kidding aside, I am happy you are here. It is nice to have someone who is a
former student. But, you are making me feel old. Congratulations on your
election, and I think we are going to have a great two years together."
Couneilman Ruskin said, "My wife asked me not to embarrass her by asking
her to stand, and I won't do that. But I do want to thank her very much for
supporting my efforts, and making it possible to devote the time that I have to the
City. Cheryl, without your help I couldn't have been elected, and I would not
have the freedom to serve as I have. So, thank you very much."
Couneilman Hartnett said, "There are many thanks to give. I need to certainly
thank my wife and my sons for bearing with me in these last two years.... It is a
special challenge and a special opportunity to serve on the Council, particularly
as Mayor, and it is a sacrifice that often the Mayor doesn't fully appreciate in the
sense that it is a sacrifice quite often for the family members. The Council is
most of the time, but not always, quite fun. The role of Mayor has been most of
the time, though not always, quite fun and a great opportunity to serve the
community. But there is no question that each Council Member and the Vice
Mayor and Mayor will spend time away from his or her family members. I
would like to thank my wife and my two sons for bearing with me. I'd like to
thank in advance the spouses and significant others of each of the Council
Members who are here tonight for their forbearance as we proceed in the next
several years. I happily welcome Council Member Jeff Ira to our Chamber, and
his wife, and thank you for what will be your commitment as well to our
community in helping Council Member Ira do what I expect will be a great job
for our community. In these last three years, and particularly the last two years
as I have served as Mayor, has been a special time for me, and I think special
times are ahead of us. And it is important to look forward and not back. But, I
ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 56 NOVEMBER 14, 1997
MINUTES Page No. 024 PAGE 14
