the community. Finally I would like to thank each of those persons who have
supported me in my endeavors, not just in the campaign, and obviously I could
not have gotten reelected without tremendous support, and that support I
appreciate. That support was from Labor, from business, from people involved
in schools, people not involved in anything, other than simply trying to vote for
what they thought was best for the community. I'd like to thank all those who
made my job as Mayor a pleasure. I'd like to finally, simply thank my Council
colleagues for supporting me when I was elected as Vice Mayor and as Mayor. I
appreciate the trust and confidence that you gave me, and I would like and I
certainly hope that we will support Vice Mayor Ruskin in his endeavors, and
Mayor Howard who has served all of us so well. I can't tell you how easy it was
to be Mayor at times, because of the great efforts of now Mayor Howard. I have
often said that I could never have been Mayor had Vice Mayor not been there.
There were many occasions when she stood in for me, when she provided me
extremely wise advice and it was always a team effort, working together simply
to do the best that we could for Redwood City. I applaud both Vice Mayor
Ruskin for his election and particularly express my appreciation to Mayor
Howard for what she did to help me as Mayor. I know that she will be a great
Mayor for Redwood City."
Councilman Leipzig said, "Thank you Madam Mayor. I usually say that when I
go home for the holidays and Mom is in a bad mood. We say Madam Mayor just
to try to make it a little better. Jim mentioned spouses in the audience and
significant others. As he knows I am not married yet. So if my future spouse is
in the audience please identify yourself.... I am glad the election is over. It is
over tonight. We move forward from here. I congratulate the victorious
candidates. Jeff Ira, they always put an Ira next to me, but both are friends so I
am happy. . .. I look forward to working with all my colleagues in the next two
years, and I mean that. I look forward to working with you to clean up the City
on code enforcement. The traffic issues so we get the Monsignor up and back
from St. Pius to Candlestick Park in a safe time. I look forward to working on
the budget and other basic issues that were talked about in this campaign. I am
glad that they were. And I look forward to disagreeing on other issues. I think
that is fine. Differences of opinion or philosophy are not negatives. I think it is a
democracy, and that's a good thing. Including freedom of speech of the political
parties, the Labor Unions, organized labor as well, I think that's fine. I think the
more people involved the better. And I do look forward to working with all of
you for the next two years."
Mayor Howard said, "You didn't leave me much time and I don't want people
to get too restless. I would like to start with what I consider the most important
thing, and that is to thank a few special people that are here this evening. First, I
would like to thank my East Coast representative, my big little brother, Bill
Bendernagel, who is representing my family from New York. He took a very
horrible flight from New York in bad weather so he could be here, and he has to
ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 56 NOVEMBER 14. 1997
MINUTES Page No. 026 PAGE 16
