will tell you that when we have a long, passionate meeting attended by hundreds
of residents, that it is a sign that the Council is out of touch with the concerns of
our public. I will tell you that it is a sign that our local government works. The
citizens can come before the Council and expect that their concerns and ideas
will be listened to. There is a newspaper that often describes our City as a glass
half empty. I will always see it as one that is at least half full. I am excited and
optimistic about the direction our community is taking. In the next two years,
you will see the completion of the new City Center Plaza, a housing and retail
center on the corner of Main and Middlefield' the presence of U.C. Berkeley in
our downtown; the beginning of a residential village on the old Lonestar site;
noticeable beautification improvements along the El Camino Real corridor; the
clean-up of our Redwood City waterways and the restoration to their natural
beauty; and the emergency of a new and revitalized downtown merchants group
which will spearhead the already rapidly progressing resurgence of downtown.
You will stroll along a downtown street faire on Thursday evenings. You will
see the completion of a fire station in Redwood Shores, and newly trained
paramedics on our fire trucks. You'll see a larger, more efficient police force.
You'll see the on-going improvement, repair and maintenance of our roads,
sidewalks and infrastructure. You will see the continued restoration of one of
our most neglected neighborhoods in Friendly Acres. And while all this goes on
we on the Council pledge to you that we will keep our community fiscally sound.
However, no City can truly become a community without the help of its citizens.
I urge you all to be part of our City's future. To come to Council meetings, not
only with your complaints, but with workable solutions. I urge you to volunteer.
Join a City board, committee or commission, get involved in your neighborhood
organization, or form a Neighborhood Watch. Join Project Read and teach a
child how to read. I urge you to roll up your sleeves and join a citywide clean
up, rebuild a park, paint over graffiti, or plant some flowers. I urge you to get
involved. Be a positive force in guiding the future of our community. These are
truly exciting times for us. And I am looking forward to working with all of you,
and working with the City Council now and into the next century. Thank you so
much again for your support. And I pledge to you that I will work diligently to
be worthy of your support. Thank you very much."
-------------______n___-----------------------------------------------------------______n--_____------_____n
9.
