- - . -
Shores Parkway but all the feeder streets as well, used as shortcuts, through the school
zone and residential neighborhoods.
-
Mayor Howard called upon Patriek Johnston who did not answer.
Frank Deighan yielded his time to LaVerne Atherly.
LaVerne Atherly, 515 Cringle, Redwood City, said, "I think you are getting the feel of
the community as to the opposition that we have to a commercial structure that is a little
over two miles east of Bridge, which is the nominal breaking point for the existing
commercial building sites. The logic of putting a commercial building in the middle of a
residential area, still escapes me, even though the zoning says that you can. But it is
illogical, and that is why it is very difficult for me to address this particular (issue.)
Redwood Shores is a planned community. That Plan has changed considerably over the
last almost 18 years that I have lived there... and from the original Plans presented to the
Council in the late 60s. SBSA didn't even exist then at that time... I find it is very
difficult that one public body such as SBSA can dictate to the community of residents
what can and cannot be a part of our neighborhood. We all knew that SBSA was there
when we moved in, but it is not correct that they should be able to dictate what it is that we
live next to. If they feel they should have a buffer zone next to their facilities, then SBSA
in joint unity with the Council should condemn that property under eminent domain and
turn it into a park."
- Mr. Atherly said, at the Redwood Shores Homeowners general community meeting in
January of 1994, Mr. Warren said whatever was built on that site "would be low-impact"
on the community. He said, "I submit to you that 115,000 square foot building, regardless
whether it is 400 or 1,000 employees, is not a low-impact upon the neighborhood." Mr.
Atherly said if more employees than planned are eventually desired, "I guarantee you, that
the developers will come back to this body to request more parking spaces." Mr. Atherly
said the Traffic Study did not address the additional 400 employees "trying to get on to
101 in the evening when we are hostage to our own community from 3:30 until 7:30 in the
evening now. .. I have to tell you that our community is prepared to take whatever action is
necessary to at least put reason and logic back into the development of our area.... I will
cede my extra time to the next speaker."
Mayor Howard called upon Dianne Kreig who yielded her time to the next speaker.
Michele Durkin, 574 Shoal Circle, said from the audience, she agreed with LaVerne
Atherly and Mary Morrissey-Parden's recommendations to the Council.
Miehael Shoeket, 543 Marlin Drive, said, "It takes me about 30 seconds to get onto the
Parkway, and I moved from New York to get away from traffic. And the Parkway has
become the FDR ofthe west coast. I just suggest that you go out there at 7 or 8 o'clock in
the morning, or 4 to 7 0' clock in the evening, let alone trying to get out there, just to walk
- across the street to visit my neighbor in the complex is very difficult, and on two occasions
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 56 NOVEMBER 17.1997
MINUTES Page No. 053 PAGE 22
