Recognition of Menlo College Volunteers - Dr. James Kelly, President <br /> and Yasmin Lambie- Simpson, Dean of Student Affairs - Jeffrey Gee, <br /> Mayor <br /> Mayor Gee and Mr. Beth, Parks, Recreation and Community Services Director, <br /> recognized the Menlo College Volunteers who helped with the Salsa Festival. Mr. Beth <br /> thanked Menlo College for reaching out with volunteers, who then assisted in all <br /> aspects of the festival. <br /> Dr. Kelly and Ms. Lambie- Simpson spoke about their student freshmen volunteers <br /> working with and giving back to the community. Ms. Lambie- Simpson noted that they <br /> will have a reception for Paintbrush Diplomacy the next day, from 5 to 7 p.m. at their <br /> administration building, and invited the community to attend. This show goes back to <br /> the 1960s where they share diplomacy with different cultures around the world and <br /> parking is free for this event. <br /> B. Proclamation recognizing January as Human Trafficking Awareness <br /> Month - Betty Ann Boeving, representative of the Bay Area Anti Trafficking <br /> Coalition and Students from the Sequoia High School's Students Stopping <br /> Slavery Club - Jeffrey Gee, Mayor <br /> Mayor Gee and Council Member Seybert presented the proclamation recognizing <br /> January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month to Ms. Boeving and noted that this is <br /> an international, regional, state and local issue. They expressed thanks to them and the <br /> Sequoia High School students for their hard work towards eradication of human <br /> trafficking. Council Member Seybert spoke about the continued fight for a slave -free <br /> community and country. <br /> Ms. Boeving thanked the Council for the proclamation and spoke about the epidemic of <br /> human trafficking. She spoke about Redwood City leading the way by working to <br /> coordinate all services and people so that victims of human trafficking receive wrap- <br /> around services and early intervention and prevention. <br /> C. Water Conservation Poster Contest Awards Ceremony - Justin L. <br /> Chapel, Public Works Superintendent - Jeffrey Gee, Mayor <br /> Mayor Gee stated that this past year was the driest year in California history. He <br /> introduced Mr. Chapel, Public Works Superintendent. <br /> Mr. Chapel stated that this ceremony highlights an important issue in the community <br /> (presentation on file). He spoke about the program and noted that Redwood City has <br /> brought water conservation messages to the community for many years. Their theme <br /> this year is H2O Joe says "do you part, be water smart." <br /> Mayor Gee thanked the teachers who participated in the program.
