Recognition of California Apartment Association (CAA) - Tri County <br /> Division, for donation to "Create a Smile" Foundation for the Woodside <br /> Road Victims Relief Fund — Joshua Howard, Executive Director of the <br /> California Apartment Association and Rhovy Lyn Antonio, Government <br /> Affairs Director — Tri- County Division - Jeffrey Gee, Mayor <br /> Mayor Gee publicly thanked this organization and Board Members present — <br /> Anna Kramer, Melanie Roberts and the staff present for their act of altruism <br /> in making a substantial donation. He presented the CAA with a certificate of <br /> recognition and expressed his and the Council's gratitude. <br /> B. Presentation - Certificates of Appreciation to Restaurants for <br /> Participating in the Day of the Dead Celebration - Veronica Escamez, <br /> Founder of Circulo Cultural, and Connie Guerrero, Circulo Cultural Board <br /> Member - Jeffrey Gee, Mayor <br /> Ms. Escamez and Ms. Guerrero were invited to the podium to co- present <br /> certificates of recognition to the following restaurants which participated in <br /> the Dia del Muerto Celebration: LV Mar, La Viga, Quinto Sol, La Victoria, <br /> Margarita's and Milagros. Ms. Guerrero elaborated on the symbolism of this <br /> tradition and expressed profound gratitude for how these restaurants had <br /> their "altars" in a prominent location and beautifully decorated. Mayor Gee, <br /> on behalf of the City Council, thanked all those involved and the participating <br /> restaurants. <br /> C. Proclamation - Recognizing Schools Choice Week - Jeffrey Gee, Mayor <br /> Mayor Gee acknowledged Schools Choice Week as it is celebrated across <br /> the country. <br /> Agenda item 10C.A was moved up and City Manager Bell provided the report. He <br /> provided a brief synopsis of what SIMS has been required to comply with. Fire Chief <br /> Skinner provided confirmation that SIMS has been complying with the City's <br /> requirements. Council Member Bain thanked the Mayor and Mr. Bell for their <br /> leadership. One Council Member inquired about the communication plan with other <br /> jurisdiction and Dr. Bell said that the Communications Manager will be providing <br /> updates and there was a press conference on this matter during the holidays, <br /> 6. PUBLIC COMMENT <br /> Dave McCallum resident at Docktown Marina, spoke about the debris that comes down <br /> the creek, how they removed about 6,000 pounds of mostly plastic every year, and in <br /> one day, they also removed 38 shopping carts. As a member of the Pride and <br /> Beautification Committee, he asked that people pick up garbage and to not use the <br /> creek as a dump. He spoke about the two community cleanups they do every year with <br /> about 200 volunteers called "Romancing the Creek" and also spoke in favor of having a <br /> net to catch debris. <br /> CITY COUNCIL January 27, 2014 <br /> MEETING MINUTES PAGE 2 <br />
