MEMO 2/8/97 Under Community Relations, Specialist Barbour described the eight additional Items that had been suggested by Council Members on the questionnaire. The first one was to look at more Teen Centers with the focus on at-risk teens, more opportunities for youth. With Councilman Leipzig's absence, Councilwoman La Berge's departure due to her plane flight to Washington D,c. and Mayor Hartnett's wish to leave at this point due to feeling under the weather, Council decided to revisit the subject of Council Priorities at a later date, possibly at a March 3, 1997 study session at the Library. Specialist Barbour was to prepare a summary of the requests by Council made at this meeting regarding Council priorities. Pete Hughes, 18 Admiralty Court, Redwood City, said he agreed with the Council's priorities. However, he asked that two items be put ahead of those priorities: Mitigating the damage that will occur because of the purchase of Bair Island which will leave a hole in the middle of Redwood City. There is a need for a connector road between Twin Dolphin Drive to Whipple, and a desire to have the Wildlife Refuge become a semi-public park with trails, etc. Mr. Hughes said if this was not done, there would be a concerted attempt by Redwood Shores "to split away.... I think it would be terrible for Redwood Shores to do that, but it is liable to come." He said the other item that was terribly important, was the separation that existed in the community. He said the Council should provide the leadership to mitigate that. (203) Vice Mayor Howard said the limited time and number of agenda subjects at this workshop did not permit discussion of all the items Council Members had on their lists, and directed staff to make sure these two subjects were included in the next workshop. B. Robert Slusser, 541 Cringle Drive, Redwood City, expressed strong support for the philosophy of community policing, and said "It works."
