I I I II

B. Valerie Vaccarella, 2397 Goodwin Avenue, Redwood City, also spoke about
permits and tree trimming in Redwood City. She said she had been unaware of
~ the need for a permit, when a city employee came to her house and advised her,
rather rudely, of the punishment for trimming a Heritage tree without a permit.
Mrs. Vaccarella described how PG&E trims trees that encroach on their
easements in the rear of houses on her block, and asked if PG&E had to have
permits as well. She asked "if the tree creates a safety hazard and causes
personal property damage, who is responsible for this, since it is a Heritage tree?"
Mayor Hartnett referred this matter to the City Manager to review I) the
encounter with the City employee, and 2) PG&E and Heritage tree policies.
City Manager Everett said he would look into both matters and apologized for
the behavior of any City employee if that employee was rude in any way. He
said he knows who the people are who do this work, and he will follow up with
them and Mrs. Vaccarella.
MEMO 2/25/97
2) Council comments on other aspects of beautification and code enforcement activities;
Councilman Leipzig said Code Enforcement was one of his top priorities and thanked
Councilman Ruskin and the Team for their good work. He said the fact that it has
taken so long for Mrs. Groen to receive a permit so she can keep up her property 'Just
- mes me."
Councilman Leipzig said he was glad that the City was fmally moving forward on
this issue, and said that although focusing on El Camino Real was not his first choice
he would support that recommendation. He added, "I would like to include Woodside
Road and El Camino Real if we are going to go for commercial areas, and the
entryways.... Those three, El Camino Real, Woodside Road and the entryways, all at
once will have a better impact. I understand the need to limit the area as a test area,
trial run, but we really need to have an impact, very, very quickly to sell this to the
community, so they will go back to their neighborhoods and improve their code
problems. That is the basic goal. The City shows that we are doing something,
therefore we hope that citizens will do the same."
Councilman Leipzig suggested there were things to be done immediately on
Woodside Road, such as getting CalTrans approval to do the islands, which are bare
and look awful. He said the CalTrans area ITom Belmont into Redwood Shores "is
beautiful. Let's just go do it. Let's see what CalTrans has to say. Let's go all the way
up to the line, if not over. Let's spend the money to impTove that area that hundreds of
thousands of cars every week go through that corridor, and it looks terrible. We can do
something about it."
'-
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 55 FEBRUARY 24,1997
MINUTES Page No. 171 PAGE 10
