Aguirre; Vice-Mayor Jeffrey Gee
From: Save Pete's Harbor 2012 (Pete's Harbor current and former residents, community
supporters, Redwood City voters)--"This PIace Matters"
Date: October 16,2012
Subject: Grounds for rejection of proposed Resolution 12-23 re: approval of Planned
Development(PD) Permit, including parking exception and modifications, and a Vesting
Tentative Map, based on findings and subject to conditions of approval ("Resolution") and basis
for appeal; statement and request for appeal if Resolution adopted
Introduction:
Save Pete's Harbor 2012 ("SPH") is a coalition of current and former residents of Pete's Harbor
and,to date, a total of 1600 supporters consisting of local voters, Bay Area residents and national
supporters that oppose adoption of the above-captioned Resolution as it currently reads.
SPH insists that the Planning Commission and City Council:
(a) slow down the current approval process;
(b) provide for a Study Session and/or other processes allowing for significant public
stakeholder involvement;
(c) scale back proposed development on the parcel;
(d) in all current and future developments retain a material portion of the outer harbor and
inner harbor as a publicly-accessible marina; and
(e) in all current and future development on the parcel,take into account the history and
special-use case of this lands-end bayfront property directly across from a federal
wetlands and habitat preserve to permit only responsible and appropriate development of
the paved portions of the site.
Background:
Pete's Harbor is a social and cultural institution on the Peninsula, and has been a Redwood City
icon for over 50 years.Many consider it a historic landmark worthy of local, state or national
designation as such. Since its founding it has been in constant use as a harbor and marina
accessible to, and used by,the general public. Many local and Bay Area residents have lasting
fond memories of childhood visits to the harbor and marina.
It has housed restaurants, a shipyard,a boat launch ramp, small businesses, and a safe and tight-
knit liveaboard community of boaters and RV-dwellers, some of whom have lived at Pete's for
decades. This housing is affordable and has enabled veterans, single parents, small families, those
starting businesses, and those of moderate means to achieve housing in Redwood City in a
special-use case that is irreplaceable if the Resolution passes.
1
