under budget. The City must pay the County two annual payments of
$45,000 each, and that can be done with some savings, resulting in a savings
to the CIP budget.
Director Nelson said the additional funds for the Teen Center in the
Redwood Shores Community Center has already been approved by Council.
Director Nelson said in the CDBG budget which was just approved, there is
$50,000 for El Camino Real beautification and funding for the Veterans
Memorial Senior Center roof and Hoover pool. Next year in 1998/99 there
will be a reduction in the CIP for Hoover pool because of the CDBG funds.
Director Nelson said the Gas Tax construction will pay for the Broadway
sidewalk maintenance, Winslow Avenue street modification, and there are
some other savings in street projects. Net savings was a goal of the Code
Enforcement Committee to aid in the beautification of El Camino Real, and
$86,000 was realized for that project.
Director Nelson said two traffic signals will be installed or upgraded in
1997/98, which was an unexpected cost.
Another Council objective that came out of neighborhood group meetings is
traffic calming, and Director Nelson advised that the City has a traffic
consultant who will work with the neighborhoods to look at speed humps,
rotaries, and other recommendations, with a budget of $50,000.
Director Nelson said the priorities in the water fund have changed slightly
but the spending is the same, and the same with the sewer fund. She said the
GID 1-64 Committee has reviewed their program based on current estimates
and has added $263,000 from Centrum revenue which will go towards the
Fire Station in Redwood Shores Neighborhood.
2) Council questions;
Councilman Ruskin referred to the plans for the beautification of El Camino
Real, and said it was his hope that the City can "move at a fairly fast pace. I
would like to see the beautification of El Camino and then the other major
commercial thoroughfares advance rather quickly for several reasons: One, I
think the residents of the City are eager for this to happen.... Secondly, I
think there is a window of opportunity. The entire region is growing, and the
more appealing we can make our commercial thoroughfares, the more likely
we are to continue to attract new, good businesses and maintain the business
that we have. The quicker we do this the more successful I think we will be.
As the Mayor's liaison to the El Camino Real Beautification and Code
Enforcement Project we have been concentrating our efforts so far on the first
ADJOURNED REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 55 JUNE 23,1997
MINUTES PagEnNo. 420 PAGE 18
