He <br /> said arts are crucial to the growth of a City, and suggested additional funding through <br /> Redevelopment proceeds and the Transient Occupancy Tax. <br /> - <br /> Barbara Pierce, 1028 Eden Bower Lane, Co-President, Redwood City Education <br /> Foundation, said that the Civic Cultural Commission had been "instrumental in bringing <br /> about rejuvenation of cultural life in the schools in Redwood City." She described the Art <br /> Partnership which includes the schools in Redwood City which has qualified for a "$50,000 <br /> grant culminating our $100,000 fund raising drive." She said the Partnership would <br /> provide music this year to 100 class rooms, nearly 3,000 children, due in large part to the <br /> support of the Civic Cultural Commission. Ms. Pierce added that the Civic Cultural <br /> Commission represents the City's commitment to youth and culture in Redwood City. She <br /> urged the Council to take a stand in supporting the arts, beginning with "the youngsters." <br /> She said this experience will lead to a rich cultural life for adults. Ms. Pierce said music <br /> and the arts can playa strong role in giving young people something positive to do between <br /> the end of school and when their parents come home from work. She urged support for the <br /> Civic Cultural Commission and its programs. <br /> Paul Sanfilipo, 138 Woodsworth, President of the Redwood City Art Center, told the <br /> Council the Center did not pursue more funding from the Commission because they were <br /> aware of the Committee's limited resources. He expressed support for the Commission's <br /> request of Council for additional funding at this time. <br /> - John Holt, 42 Iris, Member of the Optimists Club, said that the Commission had helped to <br /> fund the musical activities at the Climate Best Fest, and the $2,400 grant this year helped to <br /> secure many local high school bands and youth groups. Mr. Holt described his support and <br /> work on behalf of the "Tis the Season" program, and urged Council's support. He said the <br /> requested amount "would be used to sponsor the activities...The funding for their <br /> advertising, because most of the groups don't have advertising money available. The <br /> Children's Holiday Parade that the Optimists Club is putting on with the PCA this year, and <br /> has for the last four years, has no funding.... We don't charge anything for it, we don't <br /> spend large amounts of money on it, except for the cost of printing flyers and mailings." <br /> Mr. Holt said they had to rely on outside sources for advertising and promotion. <br /> Mayor Hartnett asked if anyone else wished to speak to this issue, and no one wanted to <br /> speak <br /> MIS: RUSKIN/LA BERGE TO SUPPORT THE REQUEST OF THE CIVIC <br /> CULTURAL COMMISSION IN THE AMOUNT REQUESTED, $10,500. <br /> Councilman Ruskin said he was inspired and appreciative of the work done by the Civic <br /> Cultural Commission. He said the Council's support of the Commission is an investment <br /> in "ourselves, our City and our children and our future." Councilman Ruskin said the <br /> request was a small amount for such a great investment, and "we are I believe just at the <br /> - beginning of investing in the cultural life of Redwood City.
