. I II . , . -
Councilman Claire said, "I'm not sure that 35% is where I want to be, but I will go
along with it tonight. It is going to be difficult to get just our vacancies filled in the
first place. We are looking at companies around here that have so many job openings
- that it isn't even funny.... At a later date I might want to bump that up to 40% or
45%, because I think Redwood City is a difficult city from a Police Department's
point of view. .. The other think I wanted to point out is that there has been a lot of
political comment about this process. I have been watching Redwood City's politics
since 1972. No City Council before this City Council has ever sat down with
administration, the POA and discussed this issue. Ever. And this is the first Council
that has had the guts to do it. I see a lot of political hay being made out there by
individuals that use this issue for their own political purposes. And I want to point
out to the press and everyone else that prior Councils never did this... Despite all the
rhetoric.... the fact is that I think our citizens believe you are doing a damn good
job.... at the sacrifice of your own sanity. That's a tribute to the officers and the
administration that they have been able to do a good job in this City at what I would
suggest would be less than ideal circumstances as far as staffing levels are concerned.
It is a compliment to all of you working all the time on these issues."
Mayor Hartnett said it was very important that once the numbers had been finalized,
"I would hope that as a community we can help in the effort to fill those slots already
vacant now and the slots that will be newly created... We need to all work together on
this."
City Manager Everett summarized what the Council directed staff to do: The
'-- Steering Committee wìll come back with figures on calls for service and traffic data.
Staff will provide cost and absorption data for four Patrol officers, three CSOs, three
sergeants, 1.75 dispatchers and an Investigator. There has been no decision on traffic.
Mayor Hartnett directed staff to provide this information and schedule it for a
Council meeting as soon as possible.
MEMO 10/14/97
6.
