(905)
REPORT: Human Resources Director, February 5,1996 (905)
Councilman Leipzig acknowledged the 2% increase proposed for the Executive
Management employees but questioned the proposed 6% increase for the Library Director,
stating, the position is paid $81,000 per year and given the current financial status of the
City, that salary is plenty. Councilman Leipzig said that the current Library Director was
an outstanding director and the Redwood City Library was an outstanding Library, but an
increase of 6% was too much.
Councilman Claire explained that the Council had for the past 13 years used the same 10
cities for salary comparisons and based all Redwood City employees' salaries on the
median - right in the middle of the salaries paid by those ten cities. Councilman Claire
stated that this salary setting method was common practice in the private sector, and has
worked wen for Redwood City. The proposed increase would establish the Library
Director's salary at that median along with all other employees' salaries.
In response to Council questions, City Manager Everett advised that the 2% proposed
increase would move everyone's range of salaries by that amount, and the proposed 6% for
the Library Director was up to the City Manager's discretion. He added that the proposed
increase would bring the Library Director's salary up to "market."
TITLE READ.
