7.3.E. - Page 1 REPORT To the Honorable Mayor and City Council From the City Manager June 23, 2014 SUBJECT Updated engineering standards for public and private improvements RECOMMENDATION Approve, by resolution, the updated three volume document entitled "Engineering Standards for the City of Redwood City." BACKGROUND The Municipal Code (Chapter 29) requires that certain infrastructure improvements be constructed to standards as determined by the City Engineer. These Engineering Standards provide direction to engineers and developers regarding the minimum requirements for designing public right-of-way and private street improvements. These standards require periodic revision so that they continue to conform to current code and accommodate changes in construction technology, methods and materials. The City's Engineering Standards document contains three volumes: (1) Standard Technical Specifications, (2) City Standard Details and (3) Design Criteria. The existing version was significantly revised in December of 2006. Minor modifications were also made in July of 2008. The Standards are available to the public from the City's website, the Clerk's office, and the Engineering division. ANALYSIS The new and modified requirements are fully summarized in the staff report attached entitled "Summary of Revisions." The proposed revisions have been reviewed in detail by Engineering, Transportation, Planning, and Public Works Services staff. As noted above, the proposed changes will allow the standards to continue to conform to current code and will accommodate recent changes in construction technology, methods and materials. ALTERNATIVES Direct staff to additionally revise the Engineering Standards. FISCAL IMPACT There is no fiscal impact to the City as a result of this action.
