DES: yc: 1/23/68 <br />R E S O L U T I O N N O. 15 <br />RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE PORTOLA EXPEDITION BICENTENNIAL <br />FOUNDATION AND ENDORSING SENATE BILL NO. 2615 <br />WHEREAS, on November 4, 1769, Don Gaspar de Portola discovered <br />San Francisco Bay from the summit of what is now known as Sweeney <br />Ridge, in the County of San Mateo; and <br />WHEREAS, the Portola Expedition Bicentennial Foundation, <br />which was formed in 1965 for the purposes of giving recognition <br />to the historical significance of the discovery of San Francisco <br />Bay, desires to obtain State and National Landmark recognition to <br />commemorate the discovery of San Francisco Bay; and <br />WHEREAS, said Foundation urges endorsement of Senate Bill <br />No. 2615 introduced by Senators Thomas H. Kuchel and George Murphy, <br />which bill calls for the establishment of a National Historic Site <br />not to exceed 30 acres in San Mateo County for the purpose of <br />preserving and interpreting this site; and <br />WHEREAS, it is the desire of this Council to endorse the <br />activities of the Portola Expedition Bicentennial Foundation, and <br />to urge the citizens of the City of Redwood City to support said <br />Foundation; <br />NOW, THEREFORE; <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY, <br />AS FOLLOWS: <br />1. That this Council hereby approves of and endorses the <br />activities of the Portola Expedition Bicentennial Foundation. <br />2. That this Council urges the citizens of the City of <br />Redwood City to lend their support to the aforesaid Foundation, <br />and to participate in local, county, and state observances of the <br />1769 discovery of San Francisco Bay by the Portola Expedition. <br />3. That a copy of this resolution be transmitted by the <br />City Clerk to Mrs. Raymond L. Spangler, Redwood City, president <br />of the Portola Expedition Bicentennial Foundation. <br />
