02/04/02 O R I G I N A L RESOLUTION NO. 1441 3 RESOLUTION OF SUPPORT FOR CALIFORNIA STATE PROPOSITION 42, THE TRANSPORTATION CONGESTION IMPROVEMENT ACT, ON THE MARCH 5, 2002 STATEWIDE BALLOT WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City recognizes that traffic, congested transportation corridors, and overcrowded roadways are significant problems in our community, and throughout the State of California; and WHEREAS, California has the third -worst deteriorated roadways in the nation, with more than 6,000 bridges and overpasses structurally deficient or no longer meeting highway safety or design standards; and WHEREAS, Proposition 42, the Transportation Congestion Improvement Act, on the March 5, 2002 ballot, will allocate a portion of the existing State gasoline sales tax to cities and counties to be used for transportation improvements; and WHEREAS, Proposition 42 will provide guaranteed funding to every city and county in California to help fix potholes, repair dangerous road conditions, and perform other road maintenance, thereby improving the safety of children walking or biking to school; and WHEREAS, Proposition 42 will be a stable and ongoing source of transportation funding, will allow for adequate planning to address future transportation needs, and will help speed up highway safety and traffic relief projects, and expand and improve mass transit systems; and WHEREAS, Proposition 42 is based on the principle that taxes paid at the gas pump should be used for transportation purposes; and WHEREAS, Proposition 42 will help make our roads safer and reduce traffic without higher taxes, by requiring that gasoline sales taxes already in place be used to improve mass transit, highways, and local roads. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY SUPPORTS AND ENDORSES PROPOSITION 42, THE TRANSPORTATION CONGESTION IMPROVEMENT ACT, ON THE MARCH 5, 2002 STATEWIDE BALLOT F:Atty /Reso /Reso.1275 013002
