O R I G I N A L 3/16/92 <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 11706 <br /> RESOLUTION HONORING REDWOOD CITY FIRE FIGHTER GARY BELANGER FOR HIS HEROIC <br /> EFFORTS IN RESCUING EIGHT PEOPLE FROM A BURNING BUILDING ON JANUARY 10, 1992 <br /> WHEREAS, Fire Fighter Gary Belanger has served the people of Redwood City <br /> with distinction for twenty-eight years; and <br /> WHEREAS, on the night of January 10, 1992, four engines and two trucks <br /> responded to a 911 emergency call reporting a fire in a 16-unit apartment <br /> building at 305 Chestnut Street, where fire fighters found a second floor <br /> apartment unit on fire with flames extending past the third floor to the roof; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, Fire Fighter Belanger and fellow Fire Fighters Hosford and Bigot <br /> quickly rescued one man from the front of the building on the second floor, and <br /> proceeded to the rear of the building where they found eight people, including a <br /> baby, trapped in their apartments on the second floor due to extremely intense <br /> smoke in the halls and stairwells; and <br /> WHEREAS, through the skillful , quick and professional actions of Fire <br /> Fighters Belanger, Hosford and Bigot all eight people were brought out of the <br /> burning building and down the ladder safely with only one person suffering <br /> slight smoke inhalation; and <br /> WHEREAS, this courageous action in averting what could have been a tragic <br /> loss to family members, friends and our community, certainly deserves special <br /> recognition from this Council and the citizens of Redwood City; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of <br /> Redwood City hereby extends its deepest appreciation to Fire Fighter Gary <br /> Belanger for his quick response to a dangerous situation, and urges all our <br /> citizens to recognize and honor his outstanding efforts in saving the lives of <br /> eight people on the night of January 10, 1992. <br />
