BOX39I
Redwood City, California 94064.0391
Telephone (650) 790-7220
FAX (650) 261-9102
www.redwoodeity.org
Last night the City Council of Redwood City accepted the recommendation from Council
Member Howard and myself to accept a 50150 split of the Measure A funds designated
for ferry services. I'm writing to share this update with you, and to encourage your
Council to approve a similar recommendation so that we can jointly present this
recommended allocation in a letter to the Transportation Authority (TA). I've attached a
copy of our committee report to Council for your information.
Upon completion of this initial step, Redwood City and South San Francisco can then
take on the critical work with the Water Transit Authority (WTA) to secure the additional
funds that will be needed to make ferry service viable for both our communities.
I'd like to thank South San Francisco Vice Mayor Gonzalez, Council Member Addiego,
and City Manager Nagel for their frank and open comments during our discussions
regarding allocation of the Measure A funds. Certainly we all came away from those
meetings with a much better understanding of the issues faced by each of our
jurisdictions, a more unified grasp of the intent of Measure A, and the necessity of
arriving at an agreement to present to the TA. It was clear that the Measure A funds are
insufficient for the funding needs of both cities' ferry services, and that additional funds
would be needed.
Our Council believes that a split of 50150 is most equitable to all the voters of the County
who approved the Measure, but understands that this requires additional immediate
efforts to secure the funding for your initial work on the ferry service. Because of our
long positive history of collaboration in the water transit effort, Redwood City stands
ready to begin work immediately with South San Francisco and the WTA to seek that
additional funding. A successful regional fent' system requires funding for multiple sites
and will benefit from building on our strong partnership experience.
As part of our action last night, the Council authorized the Mayor to send a letter to the
Transportation Agency indicating our support for this split at such time as your Council
makes its decision. Additionally we approved the continuation of our working in
partnership to implement the system.
