L!.\- <br />. ,.l <br /> <br />OP'.,f'II'\IAl <br />en ~\J 1". <br /> <br />RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING OCTOBER AS NATIONAL CRIME PREVENTION <br />MONTH <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a 1983 Gallup Poll showed that fear of crime is <br /> <br />still pervasive in our country, with 45 percent of Americans <br /> <br />afraid of walking in their own neighborhoods at night and 13 <br /> <br />percent fearful of doing so in broad daylight; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />the <br /> <br />fight against crime <br /> <br />requires <br /> <br />a united, <br /> <br />coordinated campaign involving the City of Redwood City's <br /> <br />governmental and private sector leaders as well as our citizenry; <br /> <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, it is our duty to participate in crime prevention <br /> <br />programs which teach us how to protect ourselves, our homes and <br /> <br />our neighborhoods; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, I urge our residents and businesses to work <br /> <br />together with law enforcement officers to disseminate crime <br /> <br />prevention information throughout the City of Redwood City and to <br /> <br />assist in the apprehension, conviction and imprisonment of <br /> <br />violent criminals; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, we must combat the fear of crime which permeates <br /> <br />our lives and limits our freedom as Americans; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />we <br /> <br />join Governor George Deukmejian who, <br /> <br />in <br /> <br />cooperation with the national effort, is recognizing October as <br /> <br />National Crime Prevention Month as well as the United States <br /> <br />Postal Service who, in observance of this event, has issued the <br /> <br />first stamp commemorating crime prevention and featuring McGruff; <br /> <br />9\l14 <br />
