12/11/00 <br />O R I G I N A L <br />RESOLUTION NO. 14100 <br />Resolution Requesting that the State and Federal <br />Governments Consider the Possible Use of a Portion of <br />the Cargill Salt Property that the Federal Government is <br />Currently Negotiating to Buy to Alleviate Flooding in <br />the City of Redwood City <br />WHEREAS, the State and Federal Governments are jointly negotiating with the Cargill <br />Salt Company (Cargill) to purchase Cargill's property; and <br />WHEREAS, a portion of the property under negotiation is adjacent to the Bayfront Canal <br />between Woodside Road and Marsh Road within the corporate limits of the City of Redwood <br />City; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City and the County have been discussing options for <br />reducing flooding associated with the Bayfront Canal; and <br />WHEREAS, the Bayfront Canal is the single major stormwater outlet to the San Francisco <br />Bay for the 9.21 square mile drainage basin, which covers areas in the cities of Redwood City <br />and Menlo Park, and the towns of Atherton and Woodside, and a portion of unincorporated San <br />Mateo County; and <br />WHEREAS, use of a portion of the property the Federal and State Governments are <br />negotiating with Cargill to buy should be considered as an option to provide additional storage <br />for stormwaters which currently flood the adjacent neighborhood; and <br />WHEREAS, use of the property for flood control could compliment or facilitate the <br />reclamation of the Cargill property for ecological use; and, <br />WHEREAS, making our request for the use of this property for the above stated <br />purposes known early during the negotiation process if these uses are to be considered either <br />in the funding of the acquisition or by federal and state agencies involved in the negotiations; <br />and <br />Reso -968 1 <br />
