7/24/00 <br />ORIGINAL <br />RESOLUTION NO. 13947 <br />RESOLUTION URGING SAN FRANCISCO PUBLIC UTILITIES <br />COMMISSION TO UNDERTAKE CERTAIN SPECIFIED ACTION TO <br />IMPROVE REGIONAL WATER SUPPLY <br />WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City provides water to over 83,000 citizens, <br />including residents, businesses providing jobs for 53,000 people and major educational <br />institutions with more than 8,000 students; and <br />WHEREAS, this City has purchased water for its water customers from the San <br />Francisco Public Utilities Commission ( "SFPUC ") for many years; and <br />WHEREAS, the Hetch Hetchy Water System operated by the SFPUC is an <br />essential life sustaining artery of the community; and <br />WHEREAS, in January the Mayor of San Francisco released a Facility Reliability <br />Report pertaining to the water system which described the potential for extended <br />interruptions in supply from the system for up to 90 days, the effects of which would <br />endanger the public health, welfare and safety of the residents and other water users of <br />this City; and <br />WHEREAS, in February, the California State Auditor issued a report criticizing <br />the SFPUC's ability to implement capital improvements to it's water system and <br />suggests that the SFPUC may be unable by itself to raise sufficient funds to pay for <br />such improvements; and <br />WHEREAS, the Mayor of San Francisco has publicly noted the regional <br />importance of upgrading the Hetch - Hetchy water system, and the SFPUC's recent <br />approval of it's Water Supply Master Plan is a welcome indication of the SFPUC's <br />desire and intention to meet system -wide demands expected over the next 30 years; <br />and <br />Reso -946 <br />DFS:djk <br />R /Shared/Redwood /Council 1 <br />07/11/00 <br />
