7g)ro c lama tion <br />Juneteenth <br />WHEREAS, Juneteenth commemorates an extraordinary moment in our nation's history; and <br />WHEREAS, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, <br />declaring the slaves in Confederate territory free, paving the way for the passing of the 13th Amendment <br />which formally abolished slavery in the United States ofAmerica; and <br />WHEREAS, on June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger led troops into Galveston, Texas, to <br />announce the end of the Civil War and the insidious institution of slavery; and <br />WHEREAS, the joyous commemorations that began in Texas spread around the nation, with cities and <br />communities in California joining in celebration of this milestone in the ongoing American journey toward <br />freedom for all; and <br />WHEREAS, since 2003, the State of California has celebrated Juneteenth as a day to honor and reflect on <br />the significant contributions of Black Americans to our nation; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City honors and celebrates the vibrant culture and leadership that Black <br />Americans bring to the community; and <br />WHEREAS, we celebrate this "Freedom Day" to promote and enhance the unity and spiritual strength <br />that brought African Americans out ofslavery and sustained their dignity and prosperity to the present day; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, with Equity as the City's top guiding principle, we are committed to ensuring inclusion, <br />diversity, compassion and respect for all. <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, ELMER MARTINEZ SABALLOS, MAYOR OF <br />REDWOOD CITY, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Redwood City, do hereby <br />proclaim June 19 this year, and each year thereafter, as Juneteenth in Redwood City and urge all <br />community members to join us in observing this pivotal day in American history, and in strengthening our <br />commitment to racial equity in Redwood City and beyond. <br />Date: June 18, 2026`'�"�-'�r <br />Rirorur Mardw WOW, Mayor <br />Kala&akin, Yica livor <br />00y" <br />INOW10 Chu, CauncilY mbar <br />jqrow.
