03/19/2012 ORIGINAL RESOLUTION NO. 15177 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY IN SUPPORT OF A REDWOOD CITY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT MEASURE ON THE JUNE 5, 2012 BALLOT FOR AN EDUCATION PARCEL TAX WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City recognizes the critical importance of providing a high-quality education for our youth, to ensure they thrive and develop as confident, knowledgeable, well-rounded, and productive members of the community; and WHEREAS, in Redwood City elementary and middle schools, student achievement in reading, math, and other academic subjects, is increasing steadily; and WHEREAS, continuation of these increases in perFormance is at risk, as California's unstable financial situation has already resulted in significant cuts in State education funding, and the continuing uncertainties of the State budget situation threaten ongoing funding of the DistricYs programs in the foreseeable future; and WHEREAS, the District has already reduced spending by $13 million over the last five years through ongoing cost-cutting measures, and further cuts will significantly impact the level of support that the District can provide to students and teachers, directly impacting classroom services; and WHEREAS, funding at the level anticipated for 2012-13 will negatively affect the DistricYs efforts to continue to improve the quality of education for its children and will result in cut-backs of educational services in order to maintain financial solvency; and WHEREAS, Redwood City shares and supports the DistricYs goals of improving academic performance, of maintaining the highest possible quality of education for all children in the District, and of providing the best-qualified staff available; and WHEREAS, securing District funding at the local level will eliminate some of the uncertainty in State funding for local education in the Redwood City community; and WHEREAS, the Redwood City community has expressed a desire for strong schools, and Redwood City is the only elementary district in the immediate area that does not currently have a parcel tax; and WHEREAS, the Redwood City Elementary School District has placed on the June 5, 2012 ballot a measure to provide for an Educational Parcel Tax in support of its goals for providing a high-quality education for our community's youth, in light of the State's uncertain funding for local education.
