I
believe there is a rational and pragmatic solution to the current controversy that both
protects the greater interests of the species and the residents of your City.
It is toward this end that I would propose we proceed in the following manner. It is
important in the resolution of any controversy to take into consideration the intent and
information available from all stakeholder groups. The Audubon Society, local
residents of the Redwood Shores, recreational groups and others should have both the
opportunity to be heard and the dignity of their interests honored by this effort. It is
the common genius of the people that can often provide the key to resolution of crisis.
I would propose that we conduct a full day of meetings with stakeholders in Redwood
City to listen to their concerns and explore our common objectives.
One of our common objectives is the mutual desire to [rod a forward-looking
permanent resolution to species conservation in the area. The current resolution
imposed by the Fish and Wildlife Service puts people and species in conflict. Finding
a permanent solution that balances the interests of the species with the interests of your
constituents will benefit the parties and the species. Balanced solutions must fully
involve the citizens with species conservation.
[09901-9700/DA030840.035
ANCHORAGE BEIJING.
