Park and Recreation Commission Meeting

Minutes:

The Parks and Recreation Commission meeting was convened at
the City Hall at 8:10 p.m., December 17, 1940. Those present
were: Andrew Spinas, Chairman,' Fred Vanderborden, Loui Be Stiles,
Wayne Millington and James Hagan.

Since the secretary was unable to attend the meeting the reading of the minutes
and communications was dispensed with.

Mr. Bogie, Chairman of the committee to survey the present
recreation centers and the suggested areas, sent to Mr. Spinas,
his report, "progress"'.

Personal appearances:

~. C~e~ asked that action on the proposed site of Butcher
Field be taken- at once. He felt that if enthusiasm is cultivated among the people
of Redwood City that it will be possib1e to raise the $55,000. He suggested that if
the City made an offer to the Southern Pacific Railroad the property
might be obtained for less. He reported that the Commuters
are in favor of everything the Commission listed at the last
meeting.

~l. Hoff~an felt that since they could not find an angel,
which had only been “wishful thinking", to purchase this
property, that we should have the courage to sell a bond
issue to the people. He asked the purpose of the Parks and
Recreation Commission to which Mr. Millington answered,
“advisory capacity only". Mr. Hoffman såid the Southern
Pacific has, had an offer for part of the site for an auto
court. He reported that the Commuters will get behind any
coordinated program.

Mr. Mish said that a business at that location would de-tract from Broadway and
Main Streets.

~. Ro~!~ called attention to San Mateo's park on the high-
way which does not seem to be a hazard for children crossing
the highway.

~',
