Recognizing Disability Pride Month
July 2024
WHEREAS, Disability Pride Month is recognized every July to mark the anniversary of the passage of the
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990, landmark legislation that broke down barriers to inclusion
in society; and
WHEREAS, people with disabilities deserve to live full, self -determined lives, just like everyone else. Yet
discrimination persists for the I in 4 U.S. adults living with a disability; and
WHEREAS, this year's theme for Disability Pride Month is "We Want a Life Like Yours" — this theme comes from
The Arc's National Council of Self -Advocates. It reflects the disability community's dreams for life experiences that
they are too often denied. All month, we'll share diverse stories of people with disabilities thriving as students,
employees, leaders, engaged members of their communities and families, and more given a chance; and
WHEREAS, the Disability Pride flag symbolizes something unique within the cross -disability community. The
Black Field represents the mourning for those who have suffered, lost their lives from Ableist violence, negligence,
suicide and/ or eugenics; and
WHEREAS, the Parallel Stripes represent solidarity within the Disability Community, despite our differences; and
WHEREAS, the Five Colors — Red, Yellow, White, Blue, and Green — represent the diversity within disability and
our experiences (Mental Illness, Neurodiversity, Invisible and Undiagnosed Disabilities, Physical Disability, and
Sensory Disabilities, respectively); and
WHEREAS, there are many ways to advocate for those with disabilities: learn about the disability experience,
share your disability story, bring awareness to local policymakers, teach your children to acknowledge and include
disabled people, and hire people with disabilities, just to name a few; and
WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City amended its Strategic Plan in 2020 to include a Foundational Guiding
Principle: Redwood City will put equityfirst, urging a collective restart so that policies serve the entire community.
The City continues to strive to achieve its goals of making equity a priority, supporting inclusion, and engaging
stakeholders, and advocating for the disabled community aligns with this important principle.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, JEFF GEE, MAYOR OF REDWOOD CITY, on behalf of the
City Council and the people of Redwood City, do hereby proclaim July 2024 as Disability Pride Month and
encourage all residents to participate in the recognition and celebration of the disabled community and spread
awareness for how we can collectively improve the quality of life of all disabled people in Redwood City and
beyond.
