<br />Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI)
<br />Heritage Month
<br />May 2025
<br />WHEREAS, this month, we celebrate the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities, whose
<br />ingenuity, grit, and perseverance have pushed our great American experiment forward; and
<br />WHEREAS, from Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders whose ancestors have called their lands home for hundreds of years to
<br />Asian immigrants who have newly arrived and those whose families have been here for generations, Asian American, Native
<br />Hawaiian and Pacific Islander heritage has long been a part of the history of our great country and a defining force in the soul of
<br />our nation; and
<br />WHEREAS, Canada College is proud to be designated as an Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI)
<br />Serving Institution, a recognition earned because at least 10% of our student population identifies as Asian American, Native
<br />Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander, and at least 50% of our students are low-income; and
<br />WHEREAS, the AANHPI S. T.A.R. (Success, Transfer, Access, Relevance) Program was established to provide vital support to
<br />Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students, along with low-income, first -generation, and underserved
<br />students, helping them to persist, transfer, and complete their academic goals; and
<br />WHEREAS, the AANHPI S. T.A.R. Program is committed to fostering a sense of belonging by offering culturally relevant support,
<br />activities, events, and courses that align with the unique needs and strengths of these communities; and
<br />WHEREAS, the program includes a transfer pathway to San Francisco State University, providing students with clear and
<br />accessible routes to further their education, and the Learning Community, which integrates core academic courses such as English,
<br />Math, History, and Transfer Success with a curriculum focused on AANHPI history, culture, and experiences; and
<br />WHEREAS, the AANHPI S. T.A.R. Program supports students through the efforts of dedicated staff, counselors, peer mentors, and
<br />faculty who nurture students' academic and personal growth, creating a community where students feel seen, supported, and
<br />empowered; and
<br />WHEREAS, the program hosts a variety of events, such as university visits, transfer workshops, cultural immersion field trips,
<br />and AANHPI History Month celebrations, that enhance students' learning experiences and deepen their connection to their
<br />cultural identities; and
<br />WHEREAS, the AANHPI S.TA.R. Program is actively engaged in the broader educational community, havingpresented annually
<br />at the Asian Pacific American in Higher Education Conference, showcasing its impactful work in supporting AANHPI students
<br />and promoting educational equity; and
<br />WHEREAS, the AANHPI S. T.A.R. Program was soft -launched in Fall 2023 with the ARC transfer pathway to San Francisco State
<br />University, and in Fall 2024, expanded to include the development of the Learning Community, further strengthening the program 's
<br />commitment to student success.
<br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, ELMER MARTINEZ SABALLOS, MAYOR OF REDWOOD CITY, on
<br />behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Redwood City, do hereby proclaim May 2025 as Asian American, Native
<br />Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Redwood City and encourage all people to observe this month in honor of the
<br />history made by Asian American and Pacific Islanders.
