Recognizing Disability Pride Month
July 2025
WHEREAS, Disability Pride Month is recognized every July to mark the anniversary of the passage of the Americans
with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990, landmark legislation that broke down barriers to inclusion in society;
and
WHEREAS, people with disabilities deserve to live full, self -determined lives, just like everyone else. Yet
discrimination persists for the 1 in 4 U.S. adults living with a disability; and
WHEREAS, this year's theme for Disability Pride Month is "We Belong Here, and We're Here to Stay" — this theme
emphasizes the importance of inclusion, accessibility, and the permanent presence of people with disabilities in
society; and
WHEREAS, the Disability Pride flag symbolizes something unique within the cross -disability community. The Black
Field represents the mourning for those who have suffered, lost their lives from Ableist violence, negligence, suicide
and/ or eugenics; and
WHEREAS, the Parallel Stripes represent solidarity within the Disability Community, despite our differences; and
WHEREAS, the Five Colors — Red, Yellow, White, Blue, and Green — represent the diversity within disability and our
experiences (Mental Illness, Neurodiversity, Invisible and Undiagnosed Disabilities, Physical Disability, and Sensory
Disabilities, respectively); and
WHEREAS, there are many ways to advocate for those with disabilities, learn about disability experiences, share
your disability story, bring awareness to local policymakers, teach your children to acknowledge and include disabled
people, and hire people with disabilities, just to name a few; and
WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City amended its Strategic Plan in 2020 to include Equity as a Foundational
Guiding Principle, and the City continues to strive to support inclusion, engage stakeholders, and advocate for the
disabled community as we advance this important principle.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, EIMER MART%NEZ SABALL OS, MAYOR OF REDWOOD
CITY, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Redwood City, do hereby proclaim July 2025 as Disability
Pride Month and encourage all residents to participate in the recognition and celebration of the disabled community
and spread awareness for how we can collectively improve the quality of life of all disabled people in Redwood City
and beyond.
