01/27/03 <br />O R I G I N A L <br />RESOLUTION NO. i LLQ4 <br />RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF FUNDING FUTURE REDWOOD CITY <br />FERRY SERVICE FROM A PORTION OF NEW STATE BRIDGE TOLL <br />REVENUES AND THE SAN MATEO COUNTY SALES TAX EXTENSION <br />WHEREAS, ferry service has the potential to be an important component of <br />Redwood City's transportation network, providing a new cost - effective and <br />environmentally responsible transit option between the Peninsula and the City of San <br />Francisco; and <br />WHEREAS, potential future development for the area in and around the Port <br />would be enhanced with the provision of effective transportation access and options, <br />and there are other commercial and residential development projects planned in <br />Redwood City that could also be served by new ferry service; and <br />WHEREAS, the San Francisco Bay Area Water Transit Authority (WTA), a <br />regional transit agency created by the California Legislature, has developed and <br />delivered to the California State Legislature a comprehensive strategy to enhance water <br />transit service with environmentally friendly ferry service; and <br />WHEREAS, in 2003, the California Legislature will review and approve a toll <br />increase expenditure plan through legislation for submission to the voters for approval in <br />2004: and <br />WHEREAS, the City Council of Redwood City has previously adopted resolutions <br />both endorsing the concept of water transit services at the Port of Redwood City, and <br />supporting funding for that project from a portion of new State bridge toll revenues; and <br />WHEREAS, in 2003, the County of San Mateo will produce a Transportation <br />Expenditure Plan for the County's sales tax extension scheduled to take effect in 2009; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Transportation Expenditure Plan for the <br />County's sales tax extension may be an additional source of revenue for the funding of <br />this project. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF REDWOOD CITY SUPPORTS THE FOLLOWING: <br />1. The inclusion of capital and operating funds for Redwood City ferry <br />service in the proposed State Bridge Toll Expenditure Plan as <br />priorities; and <br />F:Atty /Reso /Reso.1361 <br />012803 1 <br />
