03/19/2012 <br /> ORIGINAL <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 15177 <br /> RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD <br /> CITY IN SUPPORT OF A REDWOOD CITY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL <br /> DISTRICT MEASURE ON THE JUNE 5, 2012 BALLOT FOR AN <br /> EDUCATION PARCEL TAX <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City recognizes the critical importance of <br /> providing a high-quality education for our youth, to ensure they thrive and develop as <br /> confident, knowledgeable, well-rounded, and productive members of the community; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, in Redwood City elementary and middle schools, student <br /> achievement in reading, math, and other academic subjects, is increasing steadily; and <br /> WHEREAS, continuation of these increases in perFormance is at risk, as <br /> California's unstable financial situation has already resulted in significant cuts in State <br /> education funding, and the continuing uncertainties of the State budget situation <br /> threaten ongoing funding of the DistricYs programs in the foreseeable future; and <br /> WHEREAS, the District has already reduced spending by $13 million over the <br /> last five years through ongoing cost-cutting measures, and further cuts will significantly <br /> impact the level of support that the District can provide to students and teachers, <br /> directly impacting classroom services; and <br /> WHEREAS, funding at the level anticipated for 2012-13 will negatively affect the <br /> DistricYs efforts to continue to improve the quality of education for its children and will <br /> result in cut-backs of educational services in order to maintain financial solvency; and <br /> WHEREAS, Redwood City shares and supports the DistricYs goals of improving <br /> academic performance, of maintaining the highest possible quality of education for all <br /> children in the District, and of providing the best-qualified staff available; and <br /> WHEREAS, securing District funding at the local level will eliminate some of the <br /> uncertainty in State funding for local education in the Redwood City community; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Redwood City community has expressed a desire for strong <br /> schools, and Redwood City is the only elementary district in the immediate area that <br /> does not currently have a parcel tax; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Redwood City Elementary School District has placed on the <br /> June 5, 2012 ballot a measure to provide for an Educational Parcel Tax in support of its <br /> goals for providing a high-quality education for our community's youth, in light of the <br /> State's uncertain funding for local education. <br /> ATTY/RES02218/RWC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OISTRICT MEASURE FOR EDUCATIONAL PARCEL TAX RESO. # 15177 <br /> REV:03-09-21 PT � MUFF # 301 <br /> Page 1 of 2 <br />
