SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION
MINUTES OF THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1992
COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Anthony,
Commissioners Berglund, Lloyd,
Metzdorf, Sharp and Truscelli
COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioner Jordan
STAFF PRESENT: Park and Recreation
Superintendent Sally Hartman,
Recreation Supervisor Mary Kucala,
Housing Coordinator Debbie Jones
Thomas, Secretary Denise Monroe
and Joan Ferguson
GUESTS PRESENT: Executive Director Maria
Bransford
Chairperson Anthony called the regular meeting of the Senior Affairs
Commission to order at 9:00 a.m. at the Fair Oaks Senior Center,
2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, California.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of the September meeting were approved as mailed.
CORRESPONDENCE
There was no correspondence.
ITEM 1 - Vital Concerns of Seniors Survey Distribution
Joan Ferguson reviewed the results of the pilot program conducted with ten
seniors from the Veterans Memorial and Fair Oaks Senior Centers. She was
able to obtain feedback from the seniors regarding the survey and made
several suggestions on ways to improve the survey. Joan also referred to
the results of a needs assessment conducted by a consulting firm in 1989
for the City and County of San Jose. This assessment survey established a
prioritized needs list of seniors in the San Jose community and Joan felt
we could learn from the results obtained through this extensive survey.
Chairperson Anthony reviewed the survey questions with the Commissioners
and changes were made to the existing survey to make it easier for seniors
to complete. It was estimated that 3,000 surveys would need to be printed.
Commissioner Berglund will ask the Veterans Senior Advisory Council to help
subsize the cost of the printing of the survey and Executive Director
Bransford will ask the Fair Oaks Senior Center Advisory Board to assist
with half the printing costs. Chairperson Anthony said he thought the
survey could be ready to distribute beginning November 15. It was
suggested that surveys be distributed to all Redwood City senior housing
facilities, churches, hospitals and senior centers.
